WORKSHOP TALKS

The idea comes while speaking

Kleist

(On the gradual formation of thoughts while speaking)

Coming next: “Worn: A People’s History of Clothing” and the wonderful Kawandi-Siddi quilts

Saturday 11 July – 10.30 am to 1 pm

The gradual emergence of thoughts while talking and the gradual emergence of things while doing is a perfect combination – and at the same time an invitation to get in touch with each other, to discuss things and to understand them with our minds and hands. It is also about sharing experiences and time.

What happens when we understand talking not only as a means of exchange, but as a tool for thinking? When we understand doing not only as production, but as a process of discovery? The workshop discussions take place at precisely this interface. They are a mixture of artist talk and lecture, an invitation to participate – and thus become a communal space for thinking, conneting and making.

The workshop talks explore the intersection of art, craftsmanship and society. With changing focal points, artistic ideas and craft methods are presented, which can be discussed and tried out during participation. References are made to strategies of artistic creation, contemporary positions in art and art history. Artists and theorists provide insights into specific thematic areas, such as authorship in art, the use of fibres and textiles as artistic materials, quilting and embroidery as forms of expression, and the significance of colour in art.

Please note: The workshop talks are an experimental introduction to various topics - and not workshops.

The aim of the workshop talks is to facilitate access to different art forms and artistic positions in a communicative and playful way - they are deliberately not geared towards concrete results, but rather an invitation to participate.

Coming next:
„Worn: A People’s History of Clothing“  and the wonderful Kawandi quilts of the Siddi
Saturday 11 July – 10.30 am to 1 pm

The workshop talk focused on the significant book *Worn: A People’s History of Clothing* by Sofi Thanhauser and the Kawandi-Siddi quilts from India.

Over the course of these two and a half hours, we will explore the history of textile innovations, the women who shaped them, the economic significance of textile production and its impact on society and nature – and how women created beautiful textiles despite all adversities, such as the Kawandi quilts of the Siddi in India.

Programme:

During the two-and-a-half-hour workshop discussion, I will present Sofi Thanhauser’s remarkable book “Worn: A People’s History of Clothing”, with a particular focus on cotton and the East India Company, and showcase examples of the Kawandi quilts. Inspired by Sofi’s insights into the cultural history of clothing and the textile innovations of the Siddi women, we will design a patchwork block using our cherished scraps of fabric and sew it by hand.

Please note: The workshop talks are an experimental introduction to various topics – and not workshops in the strict sense.

The aim of the workshop talks is to facilitate access to various art forms and artistic positions in a communicative and playful manner – they are deliberately not geared towards concrete results, but rather an invitation to participate.
