Rosie Lee Tompkins was born in Arkansas as Effie Mae Martin Howard (1936–2006) and learned quilt-making from her mother. She was a very religious woman. I totally admire the way she works with fabrics. Every aspect of her work is self-explanatory, free and effortless. Much has been written about the Gee's Bend quilts and their authors, and rightly so of course. Here are a few links that I particularly like to look at:

If you want to know more about all kinds of quilts, check out the recordings of Mary Fons and the Quilt Nerd Show! There are over 200 videos available. Her enthusiasm helped me to trust my instincts and spend a lot of time researching quilts.

Here I also found Yvonne Wells, an artist who only started sewing wonderful figurative quilts after her retirement.
