‘There are thousands of temporary stitches sewn by hand into a couture garment during its construction, and hundreds of permanent hand stitches on the finished piece. And the first thing to notice when visiting a couture atelier is that the workers (referred to in French as mains, or “hands”) are seated at tables, rather than at sewing machines, where they sew by hand.

Das Nähen von Hand ist direkt, erfordert minimale Werkzeuge und fühlt sich organisch an. Wenn wir uns die Mühe machen und lernen, wie wir den Nähring und die Nadel im Spiel des Bewegungsablauf organisch einsetzen, gestaltet sich das Nähen von Hand schnell und unkompliziert. Mit der Hand können wir viele Dinge nähen, applizieren und besticken, die mit der Maschine nicht möglich sind. Traditionell werden Kimonos und Dirndl von Hand genäht. Auch in der Haute Couture ist das Nähen von Hand unverzichtbar. In der Textilkunst können wir uns dieses Wissen zu nutze machen.

In dem vierstündigen Workshop zeige ich den professionellen Umgang mit Nadel, Faden, Schere und vor allem, wie der Nähring benutzt wird. Wir haben Zeit, uns mit dem Bewegungsablauf der Hand vertraut zu machen und lernen, warum es besser ist, das Fadenende (Abschnittstelle) einzufädeln. Als Übungsprojekt nähen wir einen Jonglierball, den wir mit Emery füllen. So wird er ein professionelles Tool, das die Nadeln schärft.

Am Ende des Workshops hast du erste Erfahrungen mit der Kunst mit der Hand zu Nähen gesammelt und hast ein gutes Verständnis über die grenzenlosen Möglichkeiten, die die Nadel und der Faden bietet, gewonnen. Du hast ein professionelles Nadelkissen genäht, mit dem du deine Nadeln immer griffbereit und spitz zur Hand hast. Du bist in der Lage, deine Fertigkeiten für eigene Projekte auszubauen.

Bitte beachte: Wie bei handgefertigten Textilarbeiten üblich, brauchen diese Dinge Zeit. Es ist vielleicht nicht möglich, Dein Projekt vor Ort abzuschließen. Je mehr Zeit Du dafür aufwendest, desto schöner wird das Ergebnis sein.

Sewing by hand is direct, requires minimal tools, and feels organic. If we make the effort to learn how to use the sewing needle and thread organically in the sequence of movements, sewing by hand becomes quick and easy. With our hands, we can sew, appliqué, and embroider many things that are not possible with a machine. Traditionally, kimonos and dirndls are sewn by hand. Hand sewing is also indispensable in haute couture. We can make use of this knowledge in textile art.

In this four-hour workshop, I will demonstrate the professional use of needles, thread, scissors, and, above all, how to use the thimble. We will have time to familiarize ourselves with the movement of the hand and learn why it is better to thread the end of the thread (cut end). As a practice project, we will sew a juggling ball, which we will fill with emery. This will turn it into a professional tool for sharpening needles.

By the end of the workshop, you will have gained some initial experience in the art of hand sewing and a good understanding of the limitless possibilities offered by needle and thread. You will have sewn a professional needle cushion that will keep your needles handy and sharp. You will be able to expand your skills for your own projects.

Please note: As is usual with handmade textile work, these things take time. It may not be possible to complete your project on site. The more time you spend on it, the more beautiful the result will be.
